About Nankun

Hand-Painted Tibetan Miniature Art

Nankun is a brand of NANKUN INTERNATIONAL LIMITED, a company registered in Hong Kong. We create wearable miniature paintings — original works of decorative art in the Regong painting tradition of the Tibetan plateau, set into pendants for collectors and lovers of fine handcraft.

The Tradition: Regong Painting

Regong is one of Asia's great schools of fine detail painting, known for its rigorous compositional proportion, luminous mineral colour, and fine gold-leaf line work. In 2009 the Regong arts were inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Our paintings are created in this tradition and at this level of craft.

The Artist: Gazang Gyatso

Our pieces are painted by Gazang Gyatso, an accomplished painter of the Regong school who lives in Tongren, long known as “the home of Regong art.” He specialises in gold-ground and full-colour miniature painting.

His training began at the age of thirteen, when he entered the painting academy at Wutun — historically the most important training ground for Regong painters — and studied under established master painters. There he learned the history of the form and its exacting system of compositional proportion, the underdrawing canon that governs every piece. Through years of disciplined practice he became a painter recognised by senior masters of the school.

He has since travelled widely, studying the painting and mural traditions of Regong, central Tibet, and Sichuan, and has developed a style of his own — bold yet meticulous in execution, composed and far-reaching in mood. His work is admired for its rigorous proportion and quiet, concentrated presence.

Our Craft

A Regong-school artist hand-painting a miniature in fine gold line on canvas

Every piece is individually hand-painted on canvas using natural mineral pigments — malachite, cinnabar, lapis lazuli — and genuine gold leaf, applied with techniques refined over generations. Because each pendant is painted by hand and made to order, no two are ever exactly alike. Each is a one-of-a-kind original.

Made to Order

We do not mass-produce. Each pendant takes 2–4 weeks to complete. Before your piece ships, we photograph the finished work in high resolution and send it to you for approval — so you see exactly what you are receiving before it leaves our studio.
